"Pick up the Pace"

  • Arm Yourself with extra tees, ball markers, balls, etc.
  • Track the Shots so you don’t waste time looking for them
  • Think Ahead – Start planning your next shot as you approach the ball
  • Be on “go” when it’s your turn.  Get practice swings out of the way while others are hitting.
  • Hole Out – Don’t mark your ball unless you are in another player’s line. Putt continuously.
  • Line up your putt while others are putting

"Cart Smarts"

  • Do you park the cart between the green and the next tee? Yes.
  • If you can’t drive to the ball, do you take extra clubs – one for what you think you’ll need, one for less distance, and one for more distance? If you can’t drive to the ball, take 3 clubs. The one you think it is, plus one more and one less. Never walk back for a club!
  • Near the green do you take your putter as well as chipping and pitching clubs? Near the green take the putter as well as chipping or pitching clubs.
  • When sharing a golf cart, do you drop off the first player to hit, second player drivers to her ball, and then picks up the first player who has started walking towards her next shot? When sharing a golf cart, drop off the first player to hit. Second player drives to his/her shot, then picks up the first player who has started walking toward his/her next shot.
  • Do you walk and pull a cart? Pull carts are not permitted between greenside bunkers and the greens.

Posting Golf Scores (Please read carefully)

Our official season is defined by our Golf Associations to be “typically between April 1 and October 31”. Do not post any scores played on OUR COURSES until regular tee markers are set.  Scores obtained in the Winter, on our local courses are not postable regardless of tees and greens in use.  NOTE: If you play in the “SUNBELT” between November 1 and March 31, those scores should be posted when our handicap system is activated.

Seven Keys to Ready Golf

  • Stay within one shot of the group IN FRONT of you.  If you cannot, and there is a group behind you that is pushing, let them play through as soon as possible.  One of the best locations is often on par 3 holes by allowing them to hit up to the green before your group putts out.  This will keep the pace of play flowing smoothly on the course and increase the enjoyment for everyone including your own group.
  • Hit when you are ready and it is safe.  Hit without delay; do not use the honor system.
  • When using a riding cart, drop your partner at their  ball and then continue to yours (provided that you will not be in danger).
  • Place your clubs between the green and the next tee.  This alone will save a great deal of time and walking.
  • Upon approaching the green, begin studying your putt so that when it is your turn to putt, you will be ready.
  • Once you begin putting, continue putting until you have holed out.
  • Complete your scorecard on the next tee (not on the back of the green that you have just completed).

Long rough, tricky greens, or a bad slice do not cause slow play.  These are challenges that give golf its appeal.  Slow play is the result of bad habits that waste time and impose slower play on everyone.  Many bad habits can be corrected by applying these "keys to ready golf".

Establishing a Handicap:
See Head Marshall or any member of the Golf Shop staff.  Handicap forms are available outside the Marshall Office.  Handicap computers will be activated April 15.  You can post "sunbelt" rounds from the winter.  You can begin posting rounds from local golf courses when we are on regular tees and greens.

Golf Starting Time Information:
Starting times are used as a means of providing fair access to the golf courses for members and avoiding long waits to tee off.  During the Golf Season (April through October) there are four primary ways to obtain a golf starting time (time limitations based on member category still apply).

  1. Tee times for the weekends and DuPont Company holidays are typically obtained by using the computerized TeeTime reservation system (TTRS).  Players enter desired Tee Times and course preference and a lottery is run to assign Tee Times to each group submitting a request.  This application for a Tee Time may be made as early as 10 days in advance of the desired weekend up until the Wednesday morning prior to it.  Certain time restrictions on course usage apply depending upon the player's membership category.  Unused weekend Tee Times may be obtained after the lottery via TTRS or by calling the starter on the day play is desired.  Gold can reserve anytime.  Silver has some restrictions.
  2. Tee Times for weekdays are also assigned using the Tele Tee system (302-772-8000; out-of-state Tele Tee 800-436-6002), however, not via a lottery but rather first come first served with reservations for Gold members accepted one week prior to the desired day of play and five days prior to desired day of play for Silver members.  On weekdays, Montchanin is walk-on all day.
  3. On any day of the week, a member can call the Starter on any course and reserve an unused time:  DuPont Course 421-1741; Nemourse Course 421-1759; Montchanin Course 571-1522
  4. Finally, a golfer can just show up at the course in search of the next available opening.  For single players, even when Tee Times are in use, the walk-on approach is often successful, although one runs the risk of having to wait for an opening.

During the off season, the TTRS lottery is typically still used in November-March, on the weekends, between 10AM and 3PM.  Other times are usually on a first come, first serve basis.  Any change to the procedure is posted on bulletin boards in the Clubhouse.

Specific information on the use of the TTRS system is available from the Marshall's Office (located near the Golf Pro Shop).
Personal assistance on using the system is available by contacting the Marshall's Office (421-1734, or the Golf Shop 421-1753).

Playing Times
The official golf season runs from the Saturday after the second Thursday in April (or earlier in April if conditions permit) through the last day of October.  DUring this time, DuPont will open for play at 8AM weekdays and 7AM weekends and holidays.  Nemours and Montchanin will open for play at 7AM Monday-Sunday.  No member/guest restrictions out of season.

Golf Course Dress Code
DuPont Country Club requires your observance of the dress code on the golf course.  Appropriate attire:
Shirts must have sleeves and collars.
Women may wear shirts without collars and/or sleeves, but no tank tops.
No short shorts (jogging, tennis, or similar-length shorts)
No blue jeans, dungarees, or cutoff trousers.
No tennis skirts, exercise, warm-up or sweat clothing.
In general, if the style can't be found in a golf shop, it is probably inappropriate for the golf course.  Torn, ragged clothes are not acceptable at any time.

Guests
A member may have no more than three guests on any one occasion and must accompany and play with his or her guests. On weekends and holidays, starting times must be obtained in the normal manner. Guests can play weekends and holidays with a Gold member after 11AM and with a Silver member after 1PM. At other times they may play subject to restrictions based on their host's membership category. All guests are subject to the five-times-per-year rule and must have appropriate greens fees paid before play.

Golfers at the Club are requested to abide by golf etiquette practices and Club rules as defined in golf resolutions which are listed below.

  • A player must have his/her own set of clubs. Green-friendly-footwear is required at all times on all three courses.
  • All players should register with the Starter on duty prior to starting play. Starters are instructed to maximize course use by combining singles or twosomes into foursomes when conditions warrant.
  • Do not tee off until directed by the Starter. If no Starter is on duty, wait until the players ahead have played their second stroke and/or are out of range of your tee shot.
  • A single player must give way to twosomes, threesomes or foursomes. Twosomes and threesomes have the same right of position as a foursome. However, members are expected to play in foursomes whenever possible. Fivesomes and over are not permitted at any time.
  • Golf bags and carts must be kept off the tee area.
  • Don't move, talk, stand close to or directly behind a player when he/she is addressing the ball.
  • Use only one ball per hole per player unless a provisional ball is used. No practicing is permitted on the golf courses. Practice areas are provided and should be used for this purpose.
  • No more than two players and two golf bags are permitted on a golf car. Keep golf cars and carts on designated paths and off fairways, unless otherwise instructed..
  • Caddies are employed only by the players, who are solely responsible for the caddies' conduct.
  • The use of cellular phones is discouraged except in emergencies.
  • Allow faster groups to play through when it is safe to do so. Any group should give way to a faster group when there is an open hole ahead.
  • Replace ALL divots in both the fairway and rough.
  • Wait until players are safely out of range before hitting any shots. If a shot may endanger another player, give a warning by shouting Fore!
  • Limit the number of practice swings to one in order to facilitate the pace of play.
